Microgaming and All41 studios are back with a spacey, gem-encrusted title; Space Enigma online slot. The first thing you may notice about Space Enigma is the striking similarity to NetEnt’s Starburst, a slot that has become a crowd favourite since its release in 2012. From the astral themed background to the glowing prismatic symbols on the reels, this falls somewhere between the categories of a clone and homage.  Gem-themed slots are a reasonably large sub-category across the online gaming industry and Microgaming has weighed in with a fairly basic offering, featuring respins and stacked wilds as the game’s only bonus features.

Game Symbols

  • Blue, purple and cyan gems account for the lower-value symbols.
  • Green, violet, red and yellow gems are the higher value symbols.
  • The scatter is the words “Free spins” placed over a bright, yellow star and triggers the slot’s free spins feature.
  • The Wild symbol is a multicoloured prismatic star, substituting for any other symbol to help you land winning combinations.

Bonus Features

Stacked Wilds / Respins

When a wild symbol lands on reels 2, 3 or 4, it expands to cover an entire reel and activates a respin. The stacked wild also becomes sticky and if further wilds land, subsequent respins will be triggered. If you manage to fill the entire game grid with stacked Wilds, you may walk away with the maximum win of 1000x your stake.

Our Verdict

Space Enigma slot is a surprisingly disappointing effort. All41 studios have previously created some really good games in the past, with Book of Atem being a good example. Unfortunately, this title seems to be the interruption in their winning streak.  What you have here is essentially a clone of NetEnt’s starburst with fewer features and higher stakes. The game does look amazing with crisp, bright graphics, and the possibility of winning 1000x your stake is an attractive prospect, however, the slot suffers critically in comparison to its originator, leaving the gameplay experience feeling flat and uninspired.
